Finding a better way, the SmartWay
Fuel efficiency and reducing emissions are becoming more and more important to the trucking industry. One important government-industry partnership that is making it easier is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program.
Launched in 2004, SmartWay’s goal is to support and promote fuel efficient technology and make it easier for trucking to adopt the technology. And, so far it has been very successful. Here are a few of the industry accomplishments under SmartWay.
* Saving 50 million barrels of fuel ($6.1 billion dollars in fuel costs saved)
* Eliminating 16.5 million metric tons of CO2 – equivalent of taking over 3 million cars off the road
* Eliminating 235,000 of tons NOx
* Eliminating 9,000 tons of PM
The EPA and its industry partners are now working to take SmartWay to the next level by making the brand more recognizable and changing the way they measure performance. They plan to move away from a standard fuel efficiency measurement to tracking key emissions such as CO2, NOx and particulate matter. Also, they are encouraging Congress to continue to support SmartWay.
