In the News: Trucker Shortage
Unemployment across the country remains high, and yet the trucking industry continues to weather a lengthy and costly shortage of drivers. That head-scratcher paradox is picking up interest with the nation’s news media.
The trucker population is inching up at less than 1 percent a year, while freight is growing at about 4 percent. A recent story in Springfield, Illinois’ State Journal Register noted that the industry is currently about 200,000 drivers short, with that figure expected to double within the next few years. Another piece, this time from the Associated Press, points out how some truck-driving schools in Ohio are working overtime with trucking firms to help fill openings.
And so the saga continues.
