Wyoming CDL Requirements

To be eligible to apply for a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in Wyoming, you must first pass the applicable knowledge tests for the type of vehicle you are planning to drive and obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). After you obtain your CLP, you must hold it for at least 14 days before you are qualified to move on to the CDL application process. During the CLP period, you are allowed to operate the type of commercial vehicle for which you are applying while accompanied by another driver who is licensed for the same type of vehicle. Although you are only required to hold the permit for 14 days before you can apply for your CDL, the CLP is valid for 365 days.

Other drivers who need to obtain a CLP include: drivers who are upgrading from a lower class CDL to a higher class CDL, drivers who are adding an endorsement to their existing CDL, or drivers who need to remove certain restrictions from their existing CDL.

To qualify for a CLP, you must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid Wyoming driver’s license, and pass the general knowledge written test and complete a vision screening. To pass the vision screening, you must have a reading of 20/40 in both eyes. If you fail to meet this standard with or without visual aids, you may be required to obtain a vision statement from a medical professional. When you appear in person to take your test, you must also present the following required documents:

Required Documentation for CDL Application

• Proof of Identity – Provide one of the following:
  • State-certified birth certificate
  • Valid and current U.S. passport
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Valid Permanent Resident Card
  • Valid Employment Authorization Document
  • Valid foreign passport with a U.S. visa
• Proof of Current Residence – Provide two documents that:
  • Contain your name and current physical address (no P.O. boxes)
  • Are no more than 45 days old
• Proof of Social Security Number – Provide one of the following:
  • Social Security card
  • W-2 form
  • A bank statement that includes your full Social Security number
  • Any official or government document that includes your name and full Social Security number

You may be required to present a valid DOT medical card.

Drivers who have successfully passed the necessary CLP tests, provided the required documents, and have held the permit for at least 14 days are eligible to apply for a CDL. This process will include a series of written knowledge tests with a required passing score of at least 80 percent, and a driving skills test.

Drivers who have made an appointment to take the road skills test are required to provide a vehicle that is representative of the class of CDL for which they are applying, and it must be driven to the test site by a driver who is currently licensed to drive that vehicle type. The test will include a vehicle pre-trip inspection, basic control skills test, and over-the-road skills test.

A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) physical is required when applying for a CDL unless exempted by FMCSA Part 390.3(f), 391.2, 391.68, and 398.3. CDL holders who are not physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle according to FMCSA regulations regarding vision, hearing, diabetes, or loss or impairment of limbs may submit a request for the State of Wyoming to review their medical history and consider granting commercial driving privileges solely within the State of Wyoming. This requires a statement by the National Certified Examiner that the driver’s medical condition is not likely to interfere with their ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

Please note that drivers who wish to add an endorsement when applying for a CDL in Wyoming may be required to take both the written and driving skills tests appropriate for the type of endorsement.
