CDL License Requirements

Getting your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not complicated. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulates the process to make sure potential drivers meet national safety and competency standards. While each state has its own CDL application process, all states must comply with federal requirements set by the FMCSA.

Basic CDL Requirements

To qualify for a CDL:

  • You must be at least 21 years old to operate a commercial vehicle across state lines or transport hazardous materials (HAZMAT).
  • You must be at least 18 years old to drive within your home state (intrastate only).
  • Have a clean driving record with no prior disqualifying criminal offenses.
  • Pass a medical exam conducted by an FMCSA-certified medical examiner.

Obtaining a CDL:

Step 1: You'll Need a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)

Before applying for a CDL, you first have to get a Commercial Learner's Permit. To qualify:

  • Have a valid driver's license from your state of residence.
  • Provide a 10-year driving record history.
  • Pass a CDL knowledge test with a minimum score of 80%.
  • Complete a medical certification exam from an FMCSA-approved medical professional.

Important: You must hold your CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.

Step 2: Pass the CDL Skills Test

Once you've completed the CLP requirements, you can take the CDL skills test, which consists of:

  • Vehicle Inspection Test – Check your knowledge of vehicle safety features.
  • Basic Controls Test – Maneuver and control the commercial vehicle safely.
  • Road Test – Drive under real-world conditions to prove your ability to operate a CMV.

You must take the skills test in a vehicle similar to the type you plan to drive once licensed.

Step 3: Apply for a CDL with Endorsements (If Needed)

Certain CDL jobs require additional endorsements to operate specific types of vehicles. Endorsement requirements include:

  • Double/Triple Trailers – Knowledge test only.
  • Passenger Vehicles (Buses, Shuttles, etc.) – Knowledge and skills test.
  • Tank Vehicles – Knowledge test only.
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) – Knowledge test and TSA background check.
  • Combination of Tank and HAZMAT – Knowledge test only.

CDL Disqualifications: What Can Prevent You From Getting a CDL?

Applicants can be disqualified from obtaining a CDL with these circumstances:

  • DUI or reckless driving convictions.
  • Disqualifying medical conditions that impair safe vehicle operation.
  • Felony convictions related to vehicle operation (e.g., using a CMV in the commission of a crime).
  • Recent driver's license suspensions or revocations.

CDL disqualifications vary by state, and it's important to check with your state's licensing agency for specific rules.

How Hard Is It to Get a CDL?

Earning a CDL requires both theoretical knowledge and hands-on driving skills. The difficulty level depends on your ability to:

  • Learn traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Master the mechanical functions of a commercial vehicle.
  • Develop confidence in operating large and heavy-duty trucks.

With the right training, preparation, and practice, many applicants pass the CDL exams successfully. However, some may require additional instruction to become fully proficient.

What Happens If You Fail the CDL Test?

Failing the CDL test is not uncommon, but the number of allowed retakes varies by state. Many states allow two or three attempts before requiring a waiting period or additional training. In some cases, repeated failures may mean restarting the entire CDL application process.

To avoid delays and extra costs, enrolling in a CDL training program and preparing thoroughly before testing is the best approach.
